Truths from Lonesome Dove

In the Dublin family,  we're known for our love of "Lonesome Dove."

Best mini-series......ever.

Yeah.

You could say we went to the extreme with this one.

Scott & I regularly throw out "quotes" from Lonesome Dove.

It's part of our family language.

In fact.

Over the years.

As our girls brought boys home to meet us.

We'd always get around to that critical question.

So......have you seen "Lonesome Dove?"

Our opinion of the young men often went down.....slightly.

If the answer was "no."

You could also say.

We went a step further than  just quoting.

We named our youngest after the main character.

 Taylor "McCrae" Dublin.

(Augustus McCrae.)

As well as some of our pets.

There's "Gus"

and  ole "Jasper."

It's interesting.

The attachment we sometimes have to movies.

Here's just a few of our favorite quotes.

"Life in San Francisco is still life.
If you want only one thing too much,
it's likely to turn into a disappointment."

During the many conversations Scott and I have
about moving out West,
(Scott would REALLY love to move to Wyoming)
I'll look at him and say,
"Life in Wyoming, is still life....best to be happy with the little things."

yeah.....he doesn't always appreciate that quote.
But,
there's truth in it.

~

"I'll whack that bell if I want to"

(more effective if spoken with a Spanish accent)

Usually said when I intend to do what I want to do.
Geeh.
How often does that happen?!?
Usually muttered underneath my breath.
Scott's done his share of muttering this quote too.

and another favorite:

" Well, you know Deets, he ain't one to quit on a garment, just cause it's
gotta little age on it."

Usually said when someone in our family wears a piece of clothing
that's seen better days.

More than anything.

Lonesome Dove is just a great story.

Adventure.

Honor.

Friendship.

Vision

And

Destiny.

"You know how it works Jake, you ride with an outlaw,
you die with an outlaw.
I'm sorry you crossed that line."

“The older the violin, the sweeter the music.”

"I hate a man that talks rude," "I won't tolerate it.”

“Anyway, whacking a surly bartender ain't much of a crime.”

"Well you ain't stupid are you?   You can learn can't you!?"

"I've walked the earth in my pride all these years.

If that's lost, then let the rest be lost with it.
There's certain things my vanity won't abide.”

"Yesterday's gone on down the river and you can't get it back."

"Old Dans feeling bloody today, ain't he?"

"Well the first man comes along that can read Latin
is welcome to rob us, far as I'm concerned.
I'd like a chance t'shoot at a educated man once in my life."

Jake's always been a drifter, Newt.Any wind can blow him."

"I'm just tryin' to keep everything in balance, Woodrow.
You do more work than you got to, so it's my obligation to do less."

It's not dying I'm talking about, it's living.

"My God, Woodrow.
It's been quite a party, ain't it."

"Well, Gus; there you go.
I guess this will teach me to be more careful about what I promise people in the future. "

I feel a marathon coming on.
